On World Suicide Prevention Day, let's harness our passion to break the silence and stigma surrounding suicide.

Suicide Trend Awareness Action

Young individuals (15-24 years old) are forming their identities and preparing to enter adulthood. During this period, they experience numerous changes and are more susceptible to various issues, such as bullying and even suicide, as reported by the WHO (World Health Organization).

In Indonesia, the underreporting rate of suicide cases is alarmingly high, estimated at 303%, compared to the global average of 0-50%. In 2020, there were a reported 2,700 adjusted suicide deaths, while attempts ranged between 24,300 and 72,000, indicating that approximately 73.2% of those attempting suicide are adolescents (Onie, 2022). This significant discrepancy highlights the challenges in accurately capturing the true extent of the suicide crisis in Indonesia, exacerbated by societal stigma and inadequate mental health resources.

B. Bali, often celebrated as a paradise on Earth

Conceals a heartbreaking reality as it recorded the highest suicide rate in Indonesia in 2023, with a rate of 3.07 per 100,000 residents. This figure saw a significant increase to 6.76 in 2024, highlighting a troubling trend. Research indicates that Indonesia has one of the highest recorded suicide rates globally, reaching 859.10% for suicides. The alarming statistics reflect not only personal tragedies but also underline the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support and awareness initiatives in the region. The data emphasizes the importance of addressing underlying issues contributing to this crisis, such as mental health disorders and socioeconomic pressures.

C.What are the causes?

  1. Excessive Academic Pressure: High academic demands can lead to significant stress and pressure, especially among adolescents who are still in the process of forming their identities and preparing for adulthood.

  2. Social Isolation: Social isolation can increase the risk of suicide due to a lack of social support and feelings of loneliness.

  3. Peer Harassment: Peer harassment (bullying) can cause long-lasting trauma and stress, worsening an individual's mental situation.

  4. Mental Disorders: Mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder can be major causes of suicide.

  5. Stigma Against Psychological Help: Stigma surrounding psychological help can prevent those in need from seeking appropriate mental health care.

  6. Cyberbullying: Harassment through social media (cyberbullying) can also increase the risk of suicide due to feelings of insecurity and threat.

  7. Family Dynamics: A lack of support from family or conflicts within the family can further worsen an individual's mental state and increase the risk of suicide

D. What They Contend?

  • Ezra, K62:

“Actually, there are many things that students are responsible for regarding academic pressure, parents, and the environment. To address these issues, a long-term solution involves conducting surveys about several students who genuinely need guidance or special behavior. There are those who believe in the impact of cadetization, while others consider it a burden or without any reciprocal effect. The issue of suicide trends is considered a mental burden that we must face as humans or students, and we should be more aware of each other.”

  • Widi, K62:

“So, being a student is a 'one thing' that is actually "wow, it's really tough!" It's really different from the school days when we seemed to have endless energy. In fact, it can also serve as a reminder for us to not be too apathetic. We shouldn't ignore our surroundings. And most importantly, as humans, we must be able to benefit others and be good listeners for the people around us. However, this is already our role to help each other because it feels just as unbearable to bear our own burdens alone. For those reading this, please never feel alone, don't keep everything to yourself, you are worth it. The world won't be okay if you're not okay too”

On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let's unite to change the narrative and spread hope! Remember, every conversation counts—let's talk openly about mental health and support one another! Reach out, listen, and be there for someone in need. You never know how much your words can mean!
