World No Tobacco Day
28 May 2024 | Social Issue
Hello Chemical and Food Engineering Students!!!
As we are known before from social media and news circulating in cyberspace, there are numerous individuals currently addicted to cigarettes. Smoking is an activity that is frequently practiced by people of various ages, ranging from teenagers to older individuals. According to statistical data, there are approximately 1.078 billion smokers worldwide. This activity can cause significant harm to both individuals and the environment surrounding them. Consequently, the World Health Organization has designated May 31st as World No Tobacco Day.
“Protect People Nearby”
On May 31st, the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrated World No Tobacco Day. This initiative was first launched in 1987 to safeguard individuals from the detrimental effects of tobacco. Annually, the WHO highlights various concerns to enhance public awareness about the impacts of tobacco consumption.
The day's primary objectives are threefold:
Raise Awareness
Educating people about the health risks of tobacco use, including lung cancer, heart disease, and COPD, to empower informed health choices.Reduce Tobacco Consumption
Encouraging people to reduce tobacco consumption, especially smoking, to preventable deaths and lower the risk of tobacco-related health issues.Motivate a Healthier Lifestyle
Inspiring people to adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle through alternative habits like exercise, balanced diets, and stress management for a higher quality of life.
Tobacco products, such as cigarettes, are a cocktail of harmful substances, including nicotine, tar, benzene, and benzo(a)pyrene. When burned, they release a toxic cocktail of smoke containing carbon monoxide, ammonia, dimethylnitrosamine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, and acrolein. Nicotine, a key component, can lead to addiction, causing individuals to consume excessive amounts of cigarettes daily.
In the world of tobacco, there are two distinct categories of smokers: active and passive. An active smoker is someone who directly consumes cigarettes or electronic cigarettes, while a passive smoker is an individual who doesn't smoke themselves but is exposed to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. This exposure can lead to similar health issues as active smokers, albeit to a lesser extent. The devastating consequences of smoking are far-reaching, affecting not only the smoker but also those around them. The risks include:
Emphysema
Bronchitis
Heart disease
Cancer
Asthma attacks
Pneumonia
As we mark World No Tobacco Day, it's crucial to acknowledge the far-reaching dangers of smoking, not only for ourselves but also for those around us. To make a positive impact, we can start by adopting healthier habits, such as consuming nutritious food to boost our overall well-being. If quitting smoking is a challenge, we can take a smaller step by being considerate of those around us. By asking permission before smoking, we can show respect for others' health and create a more harmonious environment.
Together, let's strive for a healthier tomorrow by making conscious choices and spreading awareness about the risks of smoking.
